Hari M. Atkuri, PhD
Founder and Principal Inventor
Hari has spent more than twenty years taking electro-optical materials from laboratory
coupons to production glass.
He holds a PhD in Physics and Chemical Physics from the Liquid Crystal Institute at
Kent State University, the laboratory where polymer-stabilized cholesteric texture was
invented. He is a named inventor on fifteen issued US patents and two pending
applications across nine patent families, with counterparts in Europe, China, Japan,
Korea, Canada, and Mexico.
From 2014 to 2022 he was Senior Engineering Manager at Cardinal Glass Industries,
where he led the engineering program behind the switchable privacy glazing technology that
Cardinal commercialized as CLiC and brought into high volume manufacturing in 2026. His
patent families there cover film-to-glass glazing construction, high performance privacy
glazing, ultralow-power drive electronics, leakage current detection, and energy recapture drivers.
Earlier he was Senior Optics Engineer at BEAM Co., working on defense and commercial
optical and display systems, and Senior Engineering Manager at Gamma Dynamics, developing
electrofluidic display technology.
He is a Life Member of SPIE and a 2019 SPIE Community Champion, and a
Life Member of the Society for Information Display, where he has served as
Marketing Vice Chair for more than ten years and as Vice Chair of the Upper Midwest Chapter
since 2021. He is the author of Methods and Properties of Liquid Crystals and Related
Devices and a contributing author to Active Plasmonic Nanomaterials.
He is also Founder and CEO of ZeGlass, Inc.

Vassili Sergan, PhD
Chief Technology Officer
Vassili is a Professor of Physics in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at
California State University, Sacramento, where he has taught and led
research since 2002. He holds a PhD in Physics from the Institute of Physics of the
Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, and his early liquid crystal research included work at
Kent State University's liquid crystal community.
His research spans the physics of anisotropic fluids and ordered layers,
surface-related phenomena, and the electro-optics of liquid crystals, the exact
science that determines how switchable glazing ages and fails. At Sacramento State he
built a fully operational research facility including a class-100 clean room and a
dedicated liquid crystal laboratory.
He is an inventor on US Patent 8,654,281, covering photo-patterned pre-tilt liquid
crystal cells and lenses.
At Smart Glass Labs he leads the measurement physics behind our instrumentation,
including the electro-optical characterization that underpins MSTS. He also serves as
Chief Technology Officer of ZeGlass, Inc.
